Grass = Hay
Manston has a policy of letting the grass grow long. It puts birds off landing on the airfield as they like to be able to look around when they're grounded. Local farmers do indeed use large tractors a couple of times a year to mow the airfield and produce hay. You can see it stacked all over the airfield if you happen to be driving through at the right time.
