Had the exact same thing happen to me (minus the birds, it was LZR turbulence at 1000ft and full power T/O plus Climb2 thrust due to reverser locked out.)
Half a dozen bangs with some yaw, EGT pegged at 912 (that is as far as it goes IIRC due to 912 being the highest Binary number the computer can cope with) and about 20+ mins to do checks, liase with ATC and agents plus have a nice cup of Tea.

My strongest memory of it (1999) was the absolute quiet as I walked out of the flightdeck door, after landing to get to door L2 before the seatbelt sign was switched off. Strong sensation of "all eyes watching me".

I thought I was going to be famous. A week later the Cardiff crew went off on a night flight to GRO and I was instantly forgotten.

(BTW, went to see B.N. over the weekend. Looks fine and is enjoying his retirement)
