you're exactly right in your ideas.

On the Fokker and the 'bus we set standard as soon as is practical after takeoff. Normally though we wait to acceleration altitude as the FMS uses the height displayed on the altimeteron the PFD as its trigger to end SRS, go into open climb or whatever it does, and doesn't care what the subscale setting is.
The standby alt gives you a clue on MSA etc.
