This one continues to pop up from time to time, MS in there wisdom dropped, or in there terms ‘Deprecated’ support for a number of streaming protocols a little over four years ago, a fact that was well documented at the time but fails to have been picked up on by website owners, result is that sometimes you will get a ‘This Protocol is not supported’ error, sometimes you will just get nothing but silence, and the problem has again surfaced with Vista which apparently will not allow uninstall of WMP, and MS support will be of little help as on the face of it WMP is running as advertised.

And I am sorry there is no quick fix resolution to this one, but if your feeling adventurous try this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932756

Or as a simpler alternative get yourself a copy of VLC player from here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ set your O/S to use it as default and enjoy streaming in any form or protocol you might stumble across.

As too the Ethernet controller, that’s your embedded chip, the one on your Main board,
Open, Control Panel, System properties, Hardware, Device Manager, and scroll down to your Network adapters. If it is having a problem it will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it, if so right click it, Select ‘Properties’ and read off the problem from the presented page then use the offered trouble shooter to solve it or click the driver tab and either click the ‘Update driver box’ which will look for the latest drivers and install them, or the ‘Roll Back Driver box’ which will replace the faulty one with a copy of the original one.

If this fails go to the website for the Main board and download the latest chipset drivers for there and install them.
