Can't speak for Virgin or BA but can definately recommend Emirates, also have you considered KLM via Amsterdam? I've only used them short haul but know people who have flown long haul with them and have given very good reports.
If your a nervous flyer then it would may be best to use your local airport rather than travel down to LHR, it would mean you wouldn't have to leave so early and fears would have less time to build (speaking from experience there).
