I know you said you are looking around SEQ, but you may want to consider regional Qld for GA. There are many small shops looking for help. Mt Isa comes to mind as an area is looking for apprentices and cant get anyone to consider moving. Age is not to big a problem, there will always be exceptions though. Many GA companies are looking for mature and "stable" individuals.
Also have you spoken to your RTOs Employment Services Manager?
There are opportunities out there. You need to look "outside the box" and be willing to compromise. GA is not known for its high pay rates either.
How much do you love aviation? Because as other responders have stated, you can make far better money in other trades.
