Crash, if you have a desktop (or access to one) rather than forking out for a USB caddy, try and get hold of a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor. This is basically a socket close coupled to an IDE plug with a power cable pigtail. Plug one end to the hard drive, the other to your desktop, auto discover the hard drive and dive into DOS (remember that??).
Mind you if the sectors are scrambled then I don't like your chances. Had to send a laptop off for recovery nearly 2 years ago. Don't know the cost (suspect BIG) but the data came back on a CD. I wanted mainly Powerpoint data...it was there but needed major reformating to make it usable again.
Oh for a backup plan that works 100%
