Bergen police detain An-22 crew after positive alcohol testsDavid Kaminski-Morrow, London (09Jan07, 16:53 GMT, 150 words)

Norwegian police are considering possible charges against a number of individuals, including cockpit crew, suspected of consuming excessive alcohol shortly before attempting to ferry an Antonov An-22 transport to Azerbaijan.

Four individuals, out of a group of 16 heading to board the huge turboprop at Bergen Flesland Airport around 06:00 yesterday, initially tested positive for alcohol consumption after being stopped at a security checkpoint.

Further tests, says a spokesman for Bergen Airport police, revealed positive tests on another three individuals. The police subsequently detained all seven who included the aircraft’s captain, co-pilot, navigator and engineer.

“Maybe some of these will be held back for a [legal] case,” he says. “But we don’t know how many we’ll hold.”

Another crew was due to arrive from Ukraine today to fly the aircraft out of Norway. It is unclear which company was operating the aircraft which had been chartered to transport industrial equipment.
