Did you have an American accent? I have always been made most welcome by French officials. I have only once been arrested at gunpoint on the way in and they were really nice about it. But then I speak French with a good accent. Uncle sam's shore patrol however kidneyed me before looking at my papers. Never said sorry afterwards.
Had to be rescued by the locals.
