Yep, Kalgoorlie it is - 2002 I think. I did a couple of freight runs across from Qld via there to Dongara and was gobsmacked at the size of those holes. Equally gobsmacked by the call-out fees for fuelling, something that was unheard of in Qld at that time. $40-$60 to pump a couple hundred litres of avgas, regardless of whether the guy was already there or not.
Can't comment on the crawlability of the pubs, given I was just stopping for food and fuel, but I'm willing to give it a shot next time through
