From the Bournemouth Echo:

DISCARDED bags of alcohol and cosmetics sparked an emergency evacuation of Bournemouth Airport this morning.

Three suspect packages were found outside the terminal building just after 7am, according to police and bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion three hours later.

It was later revealed that the bags, left near the main doors of the terminal building, contained make-up and alcohol including a bottle of port in bubble wrap.

Police said they would be checking CCTV to find out who left the items.

When the alarm was first raised by airport security staff, the terminal was evacuated and flights put on hold.

All passengers due to be leaving from the airport were advised not to travel to Hurn without checking with their carrier first and motorists were told to use alternative routes. Parley Lane was initially shut to traffic but opened soon afterwards.

Snarl-ups were reported on New Road, Whitelegg Way, Castle Lane West, the A338 Spur Road and the A31.

Passengers were looked after in the arrivals area, which was outside the security cordon.

Airport spokesperson Sally Windsor told the Daily Echo that the airport had reopened around 10.30am.

"Things are getting back to normal," she added. "We are hoping to get the delayed flights away as soon as possible but there may be a knock on effect on some flights. We will keep everyone up to date."

Passengers are still advised to contact their tour operator, carrier or the airport on 01202 364124 or 364125.
