Licence conversion JAA to FAA

I hold a french CPL/IRME with a frozen ATPL and I wish to know what I must do to get the FAA equivalent , in other words do I need to pass a Flying examination .
I want to do a type rating in the US ,I'd like to know if I need to get any US exams before that ?
