Dell Axim 51

Helikopter,

I use a DELL Axim 51 combined with Memory Map and a Holux III GPS receiver.

Excellent combination although only use as a backup and make sure primary nav is done the old fashioned way.

Advantages:
  • The GPS receiver is very powerful and once aqcuired can live in the pocket of a fleece and still receive signal
  • The overall cost of the unit is low compared with purpose made GPS units
  • Having the option for games / electronic books etc is great for waiting times
  • WiFi enabled so if somewhere civilised possible to receive email etc
  • Battery life of GPS receiver is great
  • Axim has car charger plug in
  • Pocket MS office (word / excel etc) allows for use of weight & balance spreadsheets / checklists etc

Disadvantages:
  • Battery life of Axim can be limiting if no charger socket available (especially if backlight turned up)
  • Glare difficult to overcome in cockpit
  • Non VGA screen lacks a little clarity - recommend the 51v as minimum
  • Screen size small and not very bright - recommend use as BACKUP only !
  • Mounting units can bounce considerably (i leave it on my lap)
  • Charts are memory hungry - get as much as you can (both SD and CF) - don't worry about speed of memory just: BIG and CHEAP !

HIGHLY recommend Memory Map - well worth the money (UK version contains ALL the OS 1:50,000 maps and all the CAA 1:250,000 and 1:500,000 charts !).

Best of luck and safe flying
