You do not need one to sit the exams and the medical is not required beforehand.

Thanks for the clarification - heres one other point - a CASA medical is NOT an ICAO class 1 as the colour blindness tests are not ICAO compliant - therefore you're up for the whole cost (nb this info is 18 months old though....)
