You are quite correct. This serves as a useful reminder that when a jet engine surges, you get to see
outside the engine something that there is
inside it all the time it's running - a FLAME!
Surges are spectacular, especially in low light conditions, but non-aviation people should be reminded that they (surges) look more newsworthy from outside the flight deck.
