Essentially, writing the proof for a mathematical problem is the same as reverse-engineering it. That's what we're speaking of here.
"Not impossible" may be a good way of putting it. As I understand it, some readily-available encryption can definitely be broken by an outsider - if you happen to have computers bigger than the known universe and more time than the universe has existed so far.
