It's not like you couldn't; more likely you were not allowed to, due to some airspace issue. Or the guy simply did plan to stay there. Don't expect much higher altitudes on a non-turbocharged piston, anyway..

Like everything, you get the hang of it with time. Might sound awkward at first (consider yourself in a good shape if you picked up 50%); thereafter it gets more and more normal. It's like a foreign language, you really start to understand the talking when you already expect what to hear!
