- I got taught that when you do pre-flight control checks, stick your thumb up on the yoke, and whichever way you move it, ie full right/roll right, your thumb will point at the up-going aileron

- easy to remember for a quick check.
I prefer not to rely on a rule but to work from first princples... put the stick over, look at the aileron and work out if that's increasing or decreasing the lift on that wing.
