Why is pooter so slow to start?

Thanks Chandler's Dad - I understand the basics of that, but Saab Dastard's little exposition is the sort of thing I was thinking of ........... but in a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH simpler form.
Probably the twin HD route makes most sense.
