That's true ftrplt - but only to an extent. Part of it is called 'goodwill' in some circles. You could just sit there in the cockpit having done your preflight & wait for everything to happen (in which case the entire system would fall in a pile of poo most days). Operate strictly in accordance with SOPs. You've done exactly what you're paid for. Or like most of us you can be proactive in trying to keep everything running on schedule, not being ridiculous with fuel, helping sort out everyone else's problems, etc. The company does well (or is that less badly?), and you reap the rewards. Or do you?

The fact is, noone works for nothing in their full-time job, even if you're the director of UNICEF. People work over and above their minimum job requirements for extra reward. That applies to every profession. Doctors. Engineers. Whoever. It applies universally.

Reminds me of RAAF days, which were a classic example of how you operated on a fixed salary irrespective of what the 'company finances' were like. We didn't really give a toss if we ran an hour late. We piled on fuel like there was no tomorrow (like carrying multi-sector fuel just because we could, and yes, it still happens now). Who cared? So when you bust your arse to keep the show on the road and costs down, do pretty well at it, and reap - well - almost nothing extra, there comes a time when you just don't feel like 'busting your arse' anymore! Simple, really!
