Australian held over mid-air bomb threat
August 23, 2006
CHINESE police have reportedly detained an Australian for threatening to blow up a flight to Australia, prompting an emergency landing in southern China.
The threat on Monday turned out to be a hoax. The China Southern Airlines plane landed safely and no bomb was found.
The Xinhua news agency today said police had detained an Australian man, originally from Hong Kong.
He reportedly made the threat over a failed love affair.
Xinhua did not say if the man had been charged.
The flight from Guangzhou to Sydney was turned around after about 40 minutes after a passenger discovered a note in a bathroom.
Xinhau said it warned: "There is a bomb on the aircraft."
The pilot returned to Guangzhou where the passengers were taken off the plane and police searched the aircraft.
No bomb was found and the passengers were later allowed to resume their journey.
