<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size="2">State Withdraws Charges Against CAA CEO
Friday, March 16, 2001
The CAA Board of directors reinstated Mr Trevor Abrahams as chief executive officer with immediate effect, following the withdrawal of charges against him by the state in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court yesterday.
Mr Abrahams was arrested on 28 June last year following the issue of a warrant of arrest on charges of fraud, corruption, obstruction of justice and contraventions relating to the Civil Aviation Act.
During Mr Abrahams' absence, Ms Wrenelle Stander, the Deputy CEO, was appointed Acting CEO and Acting Commissioner for Civil Aviation.
"The CAA Board of directors is concerned about how the investigation was handled, the delay in the formulation of the charges, as well as the numerous postponements of Mr Abrahams' court appearances. This results in serious doubt being cast on the justice system," said CAA Board chairperson, Mr Israel Skosana
According to the CAA Board chairman, Mr Israel Skosana, the CAA Board is pleased that Mr. Abrahams will now be able to resume his duties as Commissioner for Civil Aviation and chief executive officer.
Skosana said that the Board will discuss the findings of the Independent Review Panel (IRP) with Mr Abrahams.
"It would be a grave oversight if I fail to convey my sincere appreciation to the Deputy CEO, Ms Wrenelle Stander, for all her hard work during a very challenging period in the short existence of the CAA," said CAA Board chairperson, Mr Israel Skosana.
