ENGINE LIMIT/SURGE/STALL

Hi ,
In case of EGT approaching or exceeding limits the B737 ENGINE LIMIT/SURGE/STALL checklist calls for “A/T disengage and Thrust lever retard until indications remain within appropriate limits or thrust lever is closed”.
Let’s say shortly after takeoff, we have a red warning light on and EGT really exceeded limits (930 deg). According to the checklist we have to retard the thrust lever until indications remain within limits but doesn’t that create problems for single engine performance especially for second segment climb? I had this scenario once while climb limited weight with no bleed takeoff OAT was 39 deg.
The checklist doesnt state when you should start to retard the lever but i suppose it is like an engine fire case (400ft AGL).

Thanks,
