For "N" registered aircraft:

Under FAR 91 (non-air carrier) see 91.703 (too lengthy to post here).

Under FAR 135 see 135.3 (also lengthy).

See ICAO Annex 2 (Rules of the Air). This can usually be found in Jeppesen in international versions.
