It all depends on what is defined as a passenger. If a guy travels on the one day YMML-YSSY-YBCS on connecting flights, that's three sectors. Is he counted three times or just once? Likewise, YMML-WSSS-EGLL on QF9 is two sectors but a through journey. Again, two passengers or one? In the domestic example, I bet he is counted as three as there are three flight numbers involved but for the international journey, he's counted just the once.

Did Qantas discontinue the use of through flight numbers within Australia so as to artificially inflate the numbers carried, and so make it look better and bigger than it really is? I am sure that even the statisticians are confused as to the definition of a passenger, or as the Yanks say, boardings.
