.avi is a fairly common format however it depends on the way it was encoded, so you could see 1 .avi play in WiMP and another not, in this case it was a .avi encoded in the divx format. Divx I believe gives the same quality as standard .avi/mpg but is a smaller file abit like mp3 does for audio.
