When BA use this bay at JFK the aircraft is towed in but QF declined the option in their handling contract to save the cost of a tow in.
Must be hard to judge the distance from the wingtip to any object, especially from the LH seat where I am guessing even being able to see the RH Wing tip would be impossible. Could have been worse, the pilot could have put a bit of thrust on to get it going again
