"Stapme" Stapleton

My daughter talked to Stapme a few years ago in as a part of coursework she was doing on a journalism course. He is a fascinating character and is the subject of a biography by David Ross who also wrote a definitive biography of Richard Hillary.

During WW II there was a newspaper cartoon character who dressed in a sort of country style, tweed jacket, waistcoat, jodhpurs and a big moustache; whenever he saw a pretty girl his catchphrase was "Stapme, what a filly". Stapleton had an eye for the ladies and a big moustache and thus became known as Stapme. The tie you describe sounds as though it depicts the cartoon country type. Stapme is still alive and lives quietly near Stamford, Lincs, with his wife.
