If you get FAA IR you only need to do 15 hrs to get JAA IR instead of 50 - hence if you can get an FAA IR for less than the cost of 35hrs at home (which we all know you can) you'll save money.. and have an extra qual to boot. I know quite a few people who have done this.
I'd say $8-10,000 for the IR in the states
