I know that all of us will have different tipping points, but FWIW my firm advice is that the potential hassle from this is not worth trying to save £100. Part of the equation should be that if you are on a through ticket on any of those major airlines, if anything goes wrong in the connection (which could still happen, even with the best of planning, in either of the alternative approaches) then you will get looked after by the airline, including hotels and stuff if necessary because it's an international itinerary.
