By "same type" do you mean identical? If so, no, not necessarily.
Don't have to be same capacity, or same manfr. As long as a) they are both the same interface (SCSI / SCSI, IDE / IDE, SATA/SATA) and b) the new is NOT SMALLER THAN the original, then I can't see any problems that drive imaging software can't get around.
