On the first generation of wide body jet transports, the L1011 was certainly the most quiet, with its RollsRoyce engines....stage III right out of the box, without exception.
DC10 and 747...stage two, at heavier weights, early on.
The RR was more fuel efficient as well.
The Rollers are one very good piece of machinery.
