in some companies people are told to work extra without any compensation. I know, because I was in my previous company. They have asked for volunteers and you are free to take it or leave it. That is, if you're in and not just looking to bash the company.
I believe that the management - especially in its present configuration - is well aware of the need to attract and retain people. This is getting attention.
