I'm sorry to be so repetitive, but there is a used lens for sale that seems an affordable halfway measure. It's the Wide angle 24-120 f/3.5-5.6D IF AF Mfr # 1975
It will be some time before one can get the new 18-200 that everyone is so keen on. could this be a good stop gap? there's a pun there somewhere.
It has a lot of glass, inasmuch that it has a filter size of 72 Angle is 84-20
At just over 3" diam, it's a fairly chunky piece of kit to carry around, but I have no way of knowing its used value. (Asking is $300)
Anyone know if this is a good midrange product and how old it might be.?
