Can sometimes be prolonged - I held for about 25 minutes LH downwind for R34 once during a particularly big peak in commercial activity. At least the tower was good enough to enquire about my fuel state after 15 minutes or so!
And I was directly over a field with model aircraft activity which I suspect ATC are/were not aware of, gave me something to watch as I whiled away the time.
