Fantastic piece of advice - really appreciate it. I tried the littlemachines people - great piece of software that crunched all my old files and data into something that the Mac understands (although I have no idea why the Mac wouldn't be set up to do this already).
From what I can see, the vast majority of the files were converted properly. Some look as though they are still in code, but I suppose this is to be expected.
I've had the PowerBook for about a year now. Just bought another laptop - a Sony Vaio VGN-TX2HP. I confess that IMHO the Sony is a far superior machine. Better screen, better battery, more intuitive. A shame, because I really wanted to love the Apple. However, I am not giving up - I will continue to plug away and try to learn to love it!
