THE pilot of a helicopter which crashed in Sydney today left the scene and went home, leaving three injured passengers in the wreckage, authorities said.
The Bell 206 helicopter crashed in a paddock next to Settlers Road at St Albans, near Wisemans Ferry, in Sydney's outer north-west, about 10.10am (AEST) today.
An Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman said it was understood the flight involved a power line inspection.
The NRMA CareFlight rescue service said three people were found injured in the wreckage, including a man aged in his 50s with serious head injuries.
Two other passengers were found suffering minor injuries and were airlifted to Westmead Hospital along with the other victim.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service said the pilot had left the crash site and was later found at his nearby home.
He was taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital with neck injuries.
