Airport jobs slashed - despite profits

Jobs are being slashed at Manchester Airport despite record profits just a year ago. It is believed up to 115 jobs could be at risk. Of those 39 could go completely, while 76 jobs could change. But it is not clear how each department will be affected. The airport made record £94.8m profits in 2004-05 and passenger figures have hit 22 million. No one from the airport was available for comment. The move comes six weeks after bosses announced the departure of managing director John Spooner. Chief executive Geoff Muirhead revealed then that there would be a restructuring and two directors and two senior managers left at the start of this month.
Pressures
An airport spokesman said at the time: "All business is increasingly subject to constant change and new pressures." Staff feared job losses were in the pipeline because there was a doubling-up of roles in some departments.
The restructuring sees the end of the two separate businesses,Manchester Airport plc and Manchester Airport Aviation Services, which ran the airport.
Manchester Airport plc managed airfield operations and the terminals, aviation development, commercial development, communications, information services, planning and the environment. MAAS, meanwhile, looked after security, the car parks, occupational health, engineering, human resources, the fire station and Ringway Handling Services.
Manchester Airports Group is taking on the commercial activities of both former units. A new business called Manchester Airport Services and Operations is managing the other functions.
