Either "approach" is correct - you may go around at any time between commencing the approach and reaching the MAPt. Provided that you never go below MDA or outside of the prescribed +-5º limits on tracking you are OK.

However, this important issue of standardisation should be addressed to the instructors in question and or CFI/HoT.
