btw, as it was my first flight i visited the cockpit and had a chat to the pilots and was amazed at how old fashioned all the knobs and swithes looked!

That'll be a 727-200 or 737-400 then. Did you happen to notice whether the flight-deck was 2 or 3 person? The 727s had larger flight-decks and a flight engineer.
