One more unexpected long term effect of the Reagan administration's de-regulation.
P & W's move into PMA parts for other manufacturer's engines marks a quantum leap in the PMA Parts business. Operators have been pushing for more PMA parts to be made available for years. Engine manufacturers have resisted strongly for obvious reasons - as with the pharmaceutical industry, they claim they need the money to develop new products (or in the case of oil companies, for prospecting for new sources of energy). Though it will take a long time for the dust to settle before we see the final shape of the engine overhaul business, its about time the spares monopolies were cracked.
What next? Boeing making PMA parts for Airbusses and vice versa? I don't think so; Airframe building is mostly concerned with design and development, with manufacture of structural elements mostly outsourced already. The bits are just bolted together in Seattle, Toulouse and Hamburg. Perhaps that will be the final shape of engine building as well?
