You've had some useful and informative replies. I would echo pretty much all that has been said. From my own point of view, the deciding factor was cost, cost and cost. At 6'4" it's a fairly snug fit in the R22, but it was
miles cheaper than the Schweizer 300, in which I would have had room to stretch and is operated at an airfield only five minutes from me.
So the R22 it was. And don't be put off by the stories, but do ask your (prospective) instructors about the helicopter you intend to learn on. If money is not an issue, then why not have a trial lesson in a couple of types and go with your instincts?
