I have seen references in historical literature to "composite" airplanes - before modern composites became common. What was meant then was that different components were of different materials e.g. steel tubing truss fuselage, partially fabric-covered, partially with aluminum panels; wooden wings; etc.

So the definition has expanded a bit over the years.
