I just remembered another preflight check you might want to do - check the condition of the batteries in your torch. My torch died on me mid flight and because of this I couldn't see the RPM counter for my solo circuits, not a big problem, but if i had been on Nav ex i wouldn't have been able to read my map, which would have been disasterous!
