Don't be shy! It's actually a very pleasant diversion for a few minutes for a pilot to chat with someone who is genuinly interested and impressed, has knowledge and wants to learn more and shows enthusiasm. If it is declined, it will probably be because of a big hurry, as in running late. Try and make your letter good and written well, and sensible. You will almost certainly succeed.
