Obit reminded me of lunch with a retired air marshall a few years back.
1. He leant across the table and asked me what sort of activity generated an OpO. A training ex in Wales etc was my reply. He laughed then retorted that closing the Far East Airforce might be sufficient reason.
2. He recalled that as AOC (possibly 11 Gp - my memory fades) his COS/AOA frequently asked him of an afternoon to visit one of his stations. So he would go and check out his Meteor and fly off to one of his stations, announcing his arrival by asking to join the circuit!
On the point of comparing past leaders with the current crop, I think he would have pointed to the different environments revealed in the above anecdotes. He well remembered how as a WWII gp capt he had responsibility and power beyond that of a 1980s AVM.
