We are moving in a mounth initaly to Brisbane area. I have been through a permanent residence application process. I took 9 months and was stright forward. Much easier than travling on an overloaded boat, and risking ending up in a war zone :-). All you need is: some paperwork, an english test, health check, and some sort of higer education or jobb training, and job expirience. In fact I applied as pilot, but also have several years as a computer progammer. Will be usefull to your country!
