From news.com.au again.. .. .__________________________________-. .. .Young pilot dies after plane crash inferno. .By ALAN HARDIE. .Northern Territory News. .26mar02. .. .A young pilot who struggled unaided from his flame-engulfed plane after it crashed, died yesterday.. .. .The death of the 24-year-old pilot from Anindilyakwa Air, known as Jason, stunned the Alyangula townsfolk. . .. .Two cleaners saw the single-engined Cessna 210 clip a radio antenna and lights shortly after it took off from Groote Eylandt Airport after 3pm on Sunday. . .. .Seconds later, the aircraft's wing slammed into the antenna, which ripped into the tail. . .. .The impact of the plane hitting the ground tore off the engine and threw it several metres. . .. .The fuselage slid across the ground then burst into flames. . .. .As the contract cleaners raced to help, they saw the pilot staggering past the wreckage, having somehow freed himself. . .. .The cleaners smothered the flames around the pilot as fire and medical teams arrived. . .. .Staff at Alyangula Clinic tried to save the pilot and he was flown to Royal Darwin Hospital by an NT Aero Medical Service plane. . .. .But with 90 per cent burns, it was decided to turn off his life-support about 1pm yesterday. . .. .The pilot died shortly afterwards. Police did not release the pilot's name yesterday. . .. .Rick Peters, senior community relations officer at the Groote Eylandt Mining Company, said yesterday: "The effect of the accident on this town is devastating. . .. ."Everybody involved in the rescue is having counselling.
