In addition to Authorware, take a look at Macromedia Captivate. You can do lots of fundamental things right off the bat, but as with Authorware, the ability to use the more interesting features has a steep learning curve. I've used them both but not enough to be as proficient as I'd like.
Note that Macromedia provides a free 30 day demo of both of these programs. No features are disabled--it just stops working after 30 days. If you purchase the software you can enter the code and continue to use the version you installed... you don't have to uninstall it and reinstall a full version.
Looking back at what I've written, I feel compelled to mention that I've got no connection with Macromedia at all, (except that I've used Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash for years) so I've got no financial incentive in suggesting that you take a look.
