Angry Engineering jobs axed - BMI

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...re/4436616.stm

Airline BMI is laying off 180 engineering workers and support staff in a reorganisation.
The East Midlands-based firm said all Airbus engineering work will be done at Heathrow, while its Boeing fleet will be maintained at Castle Donington.

BMI director of engineering Ian Davies said the number of redundancies should be less than 100 out of the total workforce of 650.

The firm will continue to maintain its Embraer fleet in Aberdeen.

Mr Davies said the development of the Heathrow unit would create up to 20 new jobs in London.

A BMI statement said: "BMI will outsource some of its own major maintenance work to industry specialists where it can be undertaken in a far more cost-effective way.

"By focusing our engineering functions in this way we are removing unnecessary duplication and creating a far more efficient operation."

Mr Davies said the restructuring should be completed by spring 2006.
